Using Novel Effect
To enjoy Novel Effect you’ll need a copy of the book you want to read aloud, either in print or as an ebook.
Find your book in the app, tap print, and set your device aside. When you hear the start chime Novel Effect is ready to follow along as you read aloud from your copy of the print book and make story time unforgettable.
Yes. To enjoy Novel Effect you’ll need a copy of the book you want to read aloud, either in print or as an ebook.
Premium subscribers get unlimited access to hundreds of ebooks right in the app. Look for the ebook icon on the lower left corner.
Novel Effect has a growing collection of ebooks in the app!
To find ebooks in Novel Effect, look for the eBook icon bottom left of the cover. You can also find our entire collection of ebooks, by tapping BROWSE, then EBOOKs.
To read an in-app ebook, tap the book cover image, then tap ebook. Start reading aloud after you hear the chime. Swipe left to turn the page, and keep reading!
You can also use Novel Effect to read with ebooks wherever you access them. Simply start the Novel Effect soundscape by tapping the PRINT button. After you hear the start chime, open your favorite ebook app, and start reading aloud.
Yes. If you’re using the same device to run Novel Effect and to read your ebook, first select the book in the app and tap print. Then open the ebook reader app.
If you are using separate devices, treat your first device as a physical book, and read aloud with Novel Effect running on your second device.
Novel Effect primarily works when you read aloud from your own copy of the book. If you don’t see an ebook option in the app, then you need to have your own copy of the book on hand.
Premium subscribers get learning activity plans for select books! Look for a book with a pencil icon in the lower left corner.
On mobile, after opening a soundscape, scroll to the learning activities section and tap GET to download to your device or send to your email or printer.
On Novel Effect Web, open a soundscape and click the activity title to open it in a new browser window. Tap the download button to save to your desired location or tap the print button in your browser window to send to your printer or save as a PDF to your computer.
If you previously used the secret code provided to Premium subscribers to add book activities to your shopping cart and check out free through our website, this option is no longer available. To access a learning activity log in to your Novel Effect account and follow the instructions above.
Yes! On a mobile device, to connect a Bluetooth speaker or mirror to Apple TV, first go to your device’s Settings, select Bluetooth, then select your device from the list of available options.
On mobile, select the book you plan to read aloud, then tap the ‘Connect’ icon at the bottom of the screen and select your connected device.
On a computer, connect the device to a Bluetooth speaker through sound or audio settings, Novel Effect Web plays audio through the device level. If your speaker includes a built in microphone, tap the volume icon below the book cover to select a different microphone, like the computer’s built in mic. Our ability to follow along with your voice is best when there is more distance between the audio input (microphone) and audio output (speaker).
You can also use an auxiliary cord to connect your device to speakers through it’s headphone jack or charging port.
Almost any Bluetooth speaker should work, a 5-Watt speaker produces enough power for most 25-student classrooms. Using a Bluetooth speaker will improve your soundscape experience especially in large spaces or with large groups.
Check out the low cost Bluetooth speaker in our shop.

There are a few reasons why an error could occur. Check the specific error message to see if a reason is provided. Then, if you are on a wifi network, try again using cellular.
If you are using wifi provided by a school network and are still unable to create and account or log in, a firewall may be blocking access to the app. This issue can be solved by having IT add our list of required services to the school’s allowlist:

iPhone or iPad: Some combinations of iOS devices and operating systems have noticeably low output volume. To correct this, visit the “More” section at the bottom of your app, tap “Test audio performance,” then follow the instructions.
On Novel Effect Web confirm the selected speaker is set to the desired device by visiting your computer’s sound settings.
General audio issues may arise for a variety of reasons. These issues might include no sound at all, or sounds that do not seem to change. Here is a list of possible solutions:
- Make sure the volume level on your device or speakers is set to an appropriate level.
- As you’re using a soundscape if volume indicator is consistently moving above the halfway point when you’re not reading, try minimizing the noise in the surrounding environment.
- Make sure nothing is blocking your microphone so that Novel Effect can hear you read aloud.
- Removing some phone and tablet case will improve microphone reliability.
We’re always here to help, contact customer support at support@noveleffect.com.
For your privacy, Novel Effect is designed to timeout if we do not hear you reading from the book after a set amount of time. Sometimes a timeout can occur while you are still reading, if we are unable to hear your voice properly.
To ensure Novel Effect Web is able to follow along as you read, reduce the volume of your device, especially if you are using the built in microphone and the built in speakers. We are currently working on improvements to address this, and appreciate your support as we build in public.
Additional suggestions to try:
- If possible, connect your computer to a Bluetooth speaker or other connected sound system to improve performance of the built in microphone on your computer. Visit your computer’s sound settings to select and connect to an audio output source that is not the built in option.
- If you have access to a Bluetooth or USB lavalier microphone, connect it to your computer. Select the volume icon at the bottom left of the white container below the book cover and change the active microphone (audio input) to the desired device.
- Make sure you are close enough to your device’s microphone so that Novel Effect can hear you read aloud. When a soundscape is playing through the built-in speakers the overall output volume of your device will impact this distance, generally you should be within 5-6 feet of the device microphone with the volume set between 50-75%.
- Select the volume icon at the bottom left of the white container below the book cover to adjust Novel Effect Web’s max volume level. Please note this setting is not connected to your computer volume settings, and only adjusts the app, or soundscape, volume.
- Select the volume icon at the bottom left of the white container below the book cover and confirm the active microphone (audio input) is set to the desired device.
- As you’re using a soundscape, if the audio input indicator is consistently moving above the halfway point when you’re not reading, try reducing your computer’s volume or minimizing the noise in the surrounding environment.
We’re always here to help, contact customer support at support@noveleffect.com.
Every computer’s sound settings will be different, if you have selected a microphone input from the audio settings and Novel Effect Web is still not following along with you, we recommend verifying the microphone name and performance on a website such as Check Mic Online.
If the microphone check works, please verify the selected microphone in Novel Effect Web has the same name under the Audio Input dropdown menu after tapping the volume icon in the white container below the book’s cover image.
If you continue to have issues, please reach out to support@noveleffect.com.
